AI Search

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of making your business the one AI search tools name when someone asks for a recommendation. For a local business, that means a complete Google Business Profile, pages that answer real customer questions, open access for AI search crawlers and reviews earned honestly.

Google’s own guidance says that, from its perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO (Google Search Central). That is good news for local businesses. The fundamentals carry over, and only a few platform details are new. This guide covers both, using each platform’s documentation, plus what we see in our own Search Console data.

What is answer engine optimization?

AEO, generative engine optimization (GEO) and AI search optimization describe the same goal: getting cited or recommended inside AI-generated answers in Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT search and Perplexity. The labels differ. The inputs mostly overlap.

Google states there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page has to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet in Search (AI features and your website). Google also describes query fan-out, where its AI features run several related searches across subtopics to build one answer, which is one reason thorough coverage of a topic helps.

How Google, ChatGPT and Perplexity find local businesses

Platform What the official docs say What to do
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode Same eligibility as Search. Up-to-date Business Profile and Merchant Center information supports visibility in AI responses (source). Keep pages indexable and your Business Profile complete.
ChatGPT search OAI-SearchBot surfaces sites. Sites that opt out are not shown in ChatGPT search answers. Local results use approximate location (bots, help). Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and at your host or CDN.
Perplexity PerplexityBot surfaces and links sites and is not used to train foundation models (source). Allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt and in your firewall rules.

Two details trip up local sites. First, robots.txt is only half the job. OpenAI’s help center asks site owners to allow OAI-SearchBot and its published IP ranges at the host or CDN, and Perplexity warns that Cloudflare’s Bot Fight Mode can still challenge its crawler. Second, training and search are separate. OpenAI’s GPTBot collects training data, while OAI-SearchBot powers search, and you can block one while allowing the other.

OpenAI also says ChatGPT search sometimes works with third-party search providers and rewrites queries before sending them, and its help article references Microsoft’s privacy statement. We treat an accurate Bing Places listing as a cheap hedge for that reason.

What our own Search Console shows

We run this playbook on our own site first. Between August 1 and November 1, 2026, Dorian Media Group’s Search Console logged queries that read like prompts written for an AI tool. One began, “context: location: united states (not for language). do not include location references in your response. question: what is the cost of implementing an ai chatbot for a small business?” Our page averaged position 1.8 for it. Another opened with “about me: enterprise vp of engineering” before asking about chatbot pricing.

Of the top 1,000 queries in that window, 53 were eight words or longer. Google does not label which queries come from AI systems, so treat this as a signal and not as proof. The pattern is still useful. These questions are long, specific and loaded with context like location, role and budget, which favors pages written to answer one question well.

The local AEO checklist

01 Open the door to AI search crawlers
Check robots.txt for Googlebot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, then confirm your CDN or firewall is not challenging them. OpenAI and Perplexity both say changes can take up to about 24 hours to register.
02 Complete and verify your Google Business Profile
Google’s local ranking guidance points to complete, accurate information, including address, hours, categories and attributes, plus photos and replies to reviews. Local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence, and there is no way to pay for a better local ranking (Google Business Profile Help). Our Google Business Profile optimization guide walks through each field.
03 Keep your name, address and phone identical everywhere
Your website, Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect and industry directories should match. AI answers draw on many sources, and conflicting details make a business harder to confirm.
04 Build one strong page per service and location
Answer what customers ask before they call: what it costs, how long it takes, who it suits and what is included. Google’s guidance favors original, first-hand content over rewrites of what already ranks.
05 Add structured data that matches the page
Google’s LocalBusiness markup requires name and address and recommends telephone, url, opening hours and geo coordinates. Use the most specific business type available, and skip review markup about your own business, which Google limits to sites that review other businesses (LocalBusiness documentation).
06 Earn reviews honestly
Ask every customer, including the ones you are less sure about. Google’s Maps policy prohibits offering incentives for reviews and selectively asking only happy customers (Maps user contributed content policy). Reply to reviews, including critical ones.
07 Publish first-hand proof
Project photos, named case studies, real prices or ranges and staff expertise are hard to find anywhere else. Google also warns against manufacturing inauthentic mentions of your business.
08 Measure it
Search Console now includes a Generative AI performance report (Google). Pair it with manual prompt tests in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode, and run each prompt several times because answers vary.

What you can skip

Google says Search ignores llms.txt, that you do not need to break content into small chunks for AI and that structured data is not required for AI features. It also notes that no third-party tool has access to Google’s internal ranking or AI systems (source). OpenAI says placement in ChatGPT search is not guaranteed. Keep both points in mind when a vendor promises guaranteed AI placement, and use our questions to ask an SEO agency to vet the claim.

Why does AI recommend chains over local businesses?

This question shows up in our own keyword research. The documented part of the answer is prominence. Google says prominence reflects how well known a business is, including links and the number of reviews (source). National brands collect those signals across hundreds of locations.

A local business competes on relevance. That means a profile, service pages and reviews that match the exact request, such as a specific service, a neighborhood or a specialty. When you ask customers for reviews, it is fine to invite them to describe the job they hired you for, as long as you ask everyone and offer nothing in return.

A simple prompt test you can run this week

Prompt type Example What to record
Category and city best [service] in [city] Whether you are named and which sources are cited
Problem first who can fix [problem] near [neighborhood] Which competitors appear
Comparison [your business] vs [competitor] Whether your facts are accurate
Brand check what does [your business] do Wrong hours, services or address

Run each prompt three times per platform, logged out where possible, and note the date. Repeat monthly. You are looking for direction, since any single answer can swing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between AEO and SEO?

AEO focuses on being cited or recommended inside AI-generated answers, while SEO focuses on ranking in search results. Google says optimizing for its generative AI features is still SEO, so strong SEO fundamentals are the base of any AEO work.

How do I get my business recommended by ChatGPT?

Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and at your host or CDN, keep business details consistent across the web, earn genuine reviews and publish pages that answer customer questions directly. OpenAI says placement is not guaranteed.

Do I need llms.txt or special schema for AI Overviews?

No. Google says Search ignores llms.txt and that structured data is not required for AI features. Structured data still helps Search understand a page when it accurately matches the visible content.

Does Google Business Profile affect AI search results?

Yes. Google lists up-to-date Business Profile information among its recommendations for AI features, and local results depend mainly on relevance, distance and prominence.

How do I track whether AI tools mention my business?

Use the Generative AI performance report in Google Search Console, then run a fixed set of prompts in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode each month, several times each, and log which businesses and sources appear.
